That's all for now! Maybe I'll write out some of their stories later, or maybe just as they show up in the story. ^^ A few of them are inspired by Critical Role, and some of them don't even really have backstories yet, haha.

But! I will say that there's an Easter egg in here. . . can you find it?

Festival Participants

I've arranged a tribute to Kord in the form of a fighting festival! I figured that, since one of my players just wants to attack/kill things, he'd be a fantastic champion of Kord, er, maybe? Cheers for trying?

Only 2 of these are actually player characters (PCs), Largo & K'sagsoda; all the rest of them are NPCs aka me, lol.

Please know that this was my rough draft/original work; it's been heavily modified since we started playing, mostly because of my players, lol. I'm sure you're able to see that in the session notes: Session 1, Session 2.1, Session 2.2.

Session 2: Part 2 of 2

Largo roars as he charges the half-elf. “If you ever do that again, I…!”

“You are out here doing the bidding of orcs rather than the job I hired you for to find Father Orren! You would rather earn coin from those monsters rather than find my mentor and earn an honest wage!”

Before heading out of the mine, Largo gains a poleaxe, an orc’s finger in a jar, a Spell Scroll: Locate Object, and a shard of black metal on a leather cord. They also take the manticore’s head with them as they make their way back to the orc camp.

Largo leaps over the wall of the camp and lands directly in the center, throwing the head of the manticore at the doorway of the orc chief, who steps out and looks at the grisly trophy.

“What is this?”

“Proof,” Largo provides, still seething, “that’s what was in your mine and that one,” he says, jerking a thumb at Dax, “killed its baby.”

The chief nods at the cleric. “Good. Wouldn’t want another one of those.”

“What do we get for clearing your mine?” K’sagsoda chimes in.

“For clearing the mine, this.” He says, one of the orcs bringing a spear-like weapon made completely of a blue-tinted metal, its tip jagged and in the shape of a lightning bolt. “And for bringing me this creature’s head, I have this for you.”

One of the other orcs appears, leading a young man in chains, dressed in simple leathers that almost hid his light green skin. His black hair was tied back in a topknot while his yellow eyes scanned the scene before him.

Three orcs in the camp plus the chief, a tall ashen-skinned man, an eagle man, and a half-elf in a metal breastplate.

“Bugger!” Largo suddenly exclaims, throwing the javelin at the chief.

[Everyone but the chief and two orcs make the saving throw.]

Surprised, the chief makes an attack with his greataxe at Largo, and, in the commotion, no one sees the young half-orc man disappear.

Largo and K’sagsoda take turns attacking the chief while Dax can only look on, terribly confused as to why they would attack someone they just helped, and the two injured orcs are talking amongst themselves, trying to determine what to do.

Suddenly, the young half-orc appears mid-combat, twin daggers lodged in the war chief’s back, and he whispers something before jumping back to avoid the end of the axe.

Dax’s hands glow with a sickly green sort of flame, an attack Largo recognizes and quickly dodges before Inflict Wounds strikes the chief, body losing all tension and falling to the ground.

The last two orcs in the camp immediately bow down, and while terrified of Largo, they seem to be directing their pleas towards the younger, dagger-wielding orc.

“Should we let them live?” Largo asks their ‘prize’.

“They didn’t know.” He answers.

“Will they be a problem?”

He shifts, a little uncomfortably. “You saw the mines?” Largo nods and looks at the manticore head on the ground. “Then yeah, it’s a problem. They might join the woman that came, her and her gnolls.”

Largo dispatches the orcs quickly.

“There’s still one keeping watch out front.” K’sagsoda reminds them.

Opening the gate, the party is met with the sight of the sentry with an arrow sticking out of his throat, dead. They quickly close the gate as a voice calls out to them.

“Who goes there?”

“You should go greet them.” Largo tells Dax.

“Well considering that’s the captain of Leed’s soldiers, we all should.” He says, exiting the camp slowly and with his hands raised.

Largo follows after him, neither K’sagsoda nor their new companion to be seen.

The captain sits astride his dappled brown horse, the rest of the soldiers behind him. “Ah, it’s you,” he greets Largo, narrowing his eyes upon seeing Dax, “and you.”

“Found a manticore in the mines not too far from here, got its head in the middle of the camp behind us. Don’t worry, all the orcs are dead too.”

Startled, the captain splutters, “A what?! Guards, go investigate that camp!”

“Now, about our deal.” Largo says calmly, arms folded over his chest. “About the gnolls.”

Whipping about to make sure no one else heard the Goliath, the captain asks, “What about it?”

Largo removes a small leather bag in which he has been keeping six sets of gnoll ears and four sets of hyena ears. “Found these in the mines.”

“More gnolls? So these aren’t from the ones near Leed.”

“No, and I believe the agreed upon price was fifteen gold per ear.”

[Largo rolls a natural 20 on his intimidation.]

The captain clears his throat. “Yes, yes of course. Here’s three hundred gold.” He says, trading his bag of coin for Largo’s bag of ears. “And also these, for your… feathered friend.” The captain hands over a pair of leather bracers.

Once the guard are done investigating the camp, they leave and bid the group farewell. Tired from their foray into the mines, they bed down in the former orc camp, but not before checking it for more trinkets, which they find.

Session 2: Part 1 of 2

It’s morning now, and our three adventurers have just finished breakfast.

Largo leads the team back to the orc camp, whose gates are closed and only one guard is standing outside. K’sagsoda and Dax hang back while the large Goliath approaches.

The guard, startled by the big man’s appearance – and remembering what he and his friends did yesterday – clears his throat before addressing him. “What you want?”

An ashen hand grips the guard’s shoulder tightly. “Chief. Now.”

With a mild whimper, the guard turns and opens the gate, and an unexpected sight is revealed.

Bloodstains on the ground, signs of struggle, and only three orcs visible in the camp where there had once been twenty. A large orc, easily standing a full head above the rest – but still shorter than Largo – steps out of his tent, thick arms crossed over his broad chest.

“Were you here yesterday?” He asks as K’sagsoda and Dax approach slowly, maintaining a good distance.

“I need to talk to you.”

“My men thought your display threatening, given my absence. What do you want?”

“We need information.”

“What about?”

“We’re looking for a temple that’s supposed to be somewhere out here.”

The chief nods. “Used to be one.”

“Do you know where it is?”

With a snap of his fingers, one of the three orcs in camp rushes to a far tent. “Maybe,” the chief nods, the orc coming back to Largo and handing him the torn piece of a map with an area circled, “that’d be about where your temple is.”

“I’m also looking for maybe… I scratch your back, you scratch mine. You’ve given us this map, so is there anything we could maybe do for you?”

The chief thinks for a moment, weighing his options carefully.

“The mine. A woman came through here not long ago, asking if we wanted to join her. Most of us said ‘no,’ but some wanted to leave with her,” he says, gesturing to the blood stains on the ground, “they changed their minds later. She headed to our mine and now we can’t use it. Clear it out and I’ll give you a prize for your time, but bring back proof it’s cleared.”

Largo nods. “Seems fair enough to me, Chief. Do we go through your camp to get to it?”

“No, you leave.” The chief gruffs, pointing to the only exit to his camp, and also presumably the same direction as the mine.

The adventurers leave and trek the little ways to the mine, finding the entrance blocked by rubble. Largo attempts to move the boulders out of the way.

[Rolls a natural 1.]

Seeing this large barbarian fail to move even a single rock, Dax steps forward and manages to move a couple rocks, after which Largo takes over and, with a massive sweep of his arms, clears the debris seemingly effortlessly before heading inside, K’sagsoda in the lead. Lucky, too, as there is a log suspended above them, ready to splatter anyone who would enter against the wall, but the trap remains untouched.

Laughter makes its way to their ears, a sort of giggling. Just around the corner they can see three gnolls, two armed with spears and one armed with a bow. In front of them are four hyenas.

They are dispatched with relative ease.

Using their stealth to make their way through the stone tunnels, they head into a small dead end to search for anything useful.

Carefully walking back into the main tunnel, the party happens upon a grisly sight:

A large chamber with a fire crackling in the center. On the ground is a dead guard wearing the colors of the Leed soldiers, beside him stand three gnolls huddled in terror. On the opposite side of the fire is a large creature with reddish-brown fur as it sits in a squat holding a gnoll by the arm, its feet off the ground.

It lifts the wriggling gnoll and takes a bite out of its side. The gnoll gives a yip and stops moving almost instantly. After feasting, the large creature makes a growl and the three gnolls rush to fulfill whatever command it has given, fleeing in terror.

Largo reaches out with his greataxe and catches two gnolls off guard, killing them both in a single hit each, whispering, “Ears,” to K’sagsoda, who knocks an arrow and damages the third.

Dax, terrified of whatever is in the cave ahead of them, has no intention of harming a fleeing creature, so Largo finishes it with a thrown hand axe. They advance on the creature on the other side of the fire.

The manticore rears up on its hind legs and roars, blood still dripping from its crooked teeth.

[This mine was completely unplanned; definitely took a paragraph or two from Critical Role]

K’sagsoda knocks an arrow and strikes the beast, but to little effect as it completely ignores the arrow in its chest.

Largo leaps over the fire separating them and goes into a frenzied rage, attacking recklessly against this beast causing it severe pain but barely slowing it down.

The manticore snarls, the spines on its tail quivering as they launch from the tail at the Aarakocra ranger, taking him down to half health in a single blow.

Shaking himself, Dax manages to fully heal the marksman as he knocks another arrow to strike again, this time causing significantly more damage, Largo taking advantage of its pain to bury his greataxe into its shoulder.

Strangely, the creature makes no attempt to leave the area of the altar, upon which candles and a single basket rest.

With a great swing of his axe, Largo cleaves the manticore’s head from its body, watching as it rolls with a sickening thump. He turns and sees the basket on the altar, and inside is the manticore’s baby, fast asleep.

Dax apprroaches, gesturing to the basket. “What is that?”

“The beast’s child. We should take it back to Leed, see if they can raise it to protect them.”

The half-elf’s face twists in disgust, pointing to the downed manticore, “You want one of those things alive? In Leed?”

“It is not a thing, it’s a baby.”

“It’s the baby of one of those. They cannot be trained!” Dax exclaims, grabbing for the basket, but Largo keeps it out of his reach.

Angered, Dax casts Command on Largo, who fails his saving throw. “Give.”

Largo gives him his greataxe.

He attempts another Command but fails, instead striking at the barbarian with Inflict Wounds.

[Dax rolls a 25 to hit versus Largo’s AC of 18.]

As the wave of necrotic energy hits him, Largo drops the baby’s basket and Dax takes it from him.

“Don’t,” Largo begins, clutching his side where the spell hit, “touch. That. Baby.”

Dax’s left hand holds his holy symbol while the other hand holding the basket burns with Sacred Flame, igniting both baby and basket.

Session 1

It is early morning in the arid town of Eredin. Our adventurers wake to find themselves in their own rooms after a long night’s rest.

Coming down the stairs first is a very eagle-like Aarakocra, a longbow slung on his back with a full quiver of arrows. He heads to the bar, orders a beer, and drinks in silence.

Second to descend is a hulking, 8’ 10” ashen-skinned Goliath man, his short brown hair still sleep-tousled. He, too, approaches the bar, asking for a stew containing, at the very least, a whole animal.

“Sorry,” the man behind the counter says, “all we have is this beef stew.”

[Largo rolls perception, learns the stew is really just reheated
from the previous day, but still okay.]

He accepts the stew, mumbling to himself, and the two have the bar pretty much to themselves.

After their stew and breakfast beer, Largo and K’sagsoda leave the inn and walk about town. They find a bulletin board where jobs are posted but find it empty. An older woman, perhaps in her sixties, is approaching with a sealed envelope in her hands.

“Got somethin’ for the board?” The ranger asks.

“Oh my yes,” the woman replies, “would you happen to be headed west? You see, I need this letter delivered to the little camp of Leed, but I’m afraid none of the mail seems to be going through. Could you deliver it for me, please?”

“That won’t be a problem. How far is it from here?” The Goliath pipes in.

“Two days’ walk. Surely no trouble for such long-legged lads as you two. I need it delivered to Father Orren in the church.”

“Hang on,” K’sagsoda says as he puts his hand on Largo’s shoulder, “what’s in it for us?”

“Five gold.” The woman says with a nod. “Now. You get another five when you return with proof of delivery.”

The two men nod to each other, coming to an agreement as they accept the letter.

“See you when we come back.” Largo says as he strides confidently, stepping over the woman while K’sagsoda follows him.

The woman blushes slightly as she caught a peek beneath the Goliath’s loincloth, fanning herself quietly before going about her business.

Leed, 2 days later
