D&D Notes

Hey guys! Just wanted to give you guys a little D&D update. ^^

I have three games going on right now: two in which I am a player (with DM_S for one and DM_J for the other) and one where I am the DM. I don't think I've discussed DM_J on here before, so here we go!

Name Race Class Subclass Level
Bryn Elf Rogue Inquisitor 7
Charfeather Aasimar Paladin/Fighter Oath of Redemption 6
Hud Minotaur Barbarian Path of the Ancestral Guardian 7
Kelrith Dragonborn Cleric/Monk Way of the Open Hand 7
Nahuatl Yuan-Ti Pureblood Cleric Grave Domain 7
Nou Bodi Tiefling Rogue Arcane Trickster 7
Petty Tabaxi Bard College of Glamour 7
Rillette Firbolg Druid Circle of the Land 7

I'm playing Nahuatl, a former hermit who pledged her life to the group after they saved her from being killed by pirates. Back then the group consisted of Charfeather, Nou, Petty, and Briar, a Wood Elf ranger. Briar has left fairly recently after she was alerted of the death of her father, and her player is now Rillette. I guess she just wanted a change of pace, which is fine.

Nahuatl looked up to Briar, though, so her sudden leaving has hit her pretty hard. She's upset that Briar didn't think to tell them about her father's death, and that she left without seeking their help or comfort, so it will take her some time to even begin trusting Rillette.

Kelrith, on the other hand... it is difficult for me to keep player (male) and character (female) separate. I dislike the player and the character isn't really much better. She wanted to waterboard a kobold we were having a civil conversation with.

But! That is a different post for a different time!

Since Nahuatl is having such mixed feelings about the new group dynamic, I asked DM_J if he needed me to keep a journal for her to keep track of thoughts, feelings, etc. He said I could if I wanted to so of course I had to. Here's her first official entry:

*~*~*~*

(from the session taking place February 27, 2019)

[in Abyssal]

The barracks insists on sending an army to "take care of" the kobolds in the mines. I am wholeheartedly certain they intend to destroy them in order to obtain this "glorn" that fell from the heavens. I sent a message to the kobold who recognized me, warning them the army was coming; I hope it aids in their preparation, else I will send another with any details I can find.

Still no word from Briar, I am tempted to send her a message as well, or at the very least a letter, though I know not to where I would address it. It seems the druid we met in the library is intent on staying and the dragonborn we found in the cart has also decided to accompany us.

My feelings towards them are mixed and perhaps my judgement clouded. I pledged my life to the original members of the group, but now only Charfeather, Nou, & Petty remain; my oath stands with them and them alone, though I do find Hud's company calming, and seek to protect him to the best of my ability.

I will pray for guidance and, perhaps more importantly, patience.

🐾 Meowza! 🐾

omg I just thought of a D&D campaign where all the players are cats that walk like Puss in Boots & I just spent 3ish hours generating 6 characters (players will choose characters based on a d6,no repeats) & I haven’t even put together my temple for tonight’s game O.O
Loud Leaf, the Ragamuffin Barbarian (Path of the Ancestral Guardian)
Clever Wind, the Abyssinian Bard (College of Lore)

Input?

Hey guys! Me again, here with another question, lol.
I’m currently playing in a second game over on Discord as a Yuan-Ti Pureblood grave domain cleric of the Raven Queen. Quite the mouthful, I know, but I’m having some trouble coming up with 1) reasons she’s adventuring 2) where she was before all of this 3) how did she find out about the Raven Queen and just general basic character building things? It really seems like she isn’t speaking to me right now. :(
Her name is Nahuatl and I’m trying so hard to break her out of his demure mold she’s made for herself. She was “killed” and buried by some pirates, but she crawled her way out of the grave and was discovered by said pirates. The party managed to free her, so she feels a great debt to them and has promised to help them as best she can, but I’m a little stuck. :(
She has a sort of Aztec/Mayan feel to her from what the DM has described of the world. She is also tanned skin with hints of green, small groupings of scales on her body, forked tongue, slitted eyes… & she loves eggs (though I’m not sure if she’s ever had them yet).
Thank you all so much for your help, I greatly appreciate all your input!

But! I will say that there's an Easter egg in here. . . can you find it?

Session 5

After returning to Sanctum, Krepsis and K’myr go to their shared room with K’myr’s new friend, Belneras. Sometime after going to bed, K’myr is crying in her bed for reasons unknown.

~

As you fall asleep, you all experience a dream. It’s a strange thing, because each of you is aware of each other’s presence, and before you stands a city aflame with a single figure visible.
He seems oddly familiar, in fact, he looks just like Amilcar, but whereas Amilcar is a paladin of Omnis, the great white-horned stag god of all things, this man is a darker version of him. White antlers replaced by black, flaming horns, white armor instead black and cracking.

~

The next morning, K’myr takes the troupe day-drinking for breakfast beers. After happily speaking with the tavern’s owner, a silver-haired halfling who insists his hair used to be orange and demands to be called Orange Lightning, the group is carrying on fairly well, even Krepsis is deep in his cups and being much chattier than normal.

Suddenly, the door to the tavern opens and a haggard-looking Amilcar steps in wearing a tattered gray cloak and overall looking tired.

Pinenut, Krepsis, and Torinn all jump on him with the, “you’re secretly evil,” mentality while all K’myr wants to do is talk to him and ask him questions like, “Are you okay? Have you been travelling? Do you need some help?” however no one at the table lets her talk.

Amilcar tells us that he has just come from Ettein, and the town has been mostly razed to the ground and is surrounded and under siege by an army of the undead. The way he describes it sounds remarkably familiar, and Pinenut uses Minor Illusion to show Amilcar the dark version of himself we all saw in our dream.

Amilcar himself is confused – why is Pinenut showing him this? What a mean thing to do, but K’myr clarifies that everyone had the same dream and all the paladin had described was what they had seen. Down to the little details.

Immediately the paladin is concerned, asking questions to understand if we experienced a vision or possibly something else. While our story doesn’t have the telltale signs of vision or prophecy, Amilcar is certainly still concerned for our wellbeing, and announces that we need to head up there to investigate. He also mentions that we are not the rescue party, just a group being added to the effort, and to watch our backs.

After fighting some skeletons, zombies, and an undead minotaur, the party is making its way through Ettein as people are being evacuated and undead run rampant through the streets. Also, Amilcar himself has chosen to come with us, so we’re being escorted by a level 20 paladin. Not bad, right?

Oh, also there might be a lich of some kind just hanging out somewhere in this town. Fabulous.

Mysterious Deck

Oh my gosh, it happened, the Deck of Many Things has made an appearance. *ready, set, panic!*

Who all draws a card? All of us!

Torinn – card unknown

Pinenut –
The Key
A .50 caliber rifle. A wizard with a rifle. Oh gosh.

Krepsis –
The Fool
We just leveled up, so he was at 0 xp and very lucky. Unfortunately, he did have to draw again. So he did: twice.

Vizier
At any time you choose within one year of drawing this card, you can ask a question in meditation and mentally receive a truthful answer to that question. Besides information, the answer helps you solve a puzzling problem or other dilemma. In other words, the knowledge comes with Wisdom on how to apply it.
We’re totally going to use this to find a Lich’s phylactery.

Comet
The next time Krepsis passes an encounter by himself, he levels up. Tada!

K’myr –
           Knight
You gain the service of a 4th-level Fighter who appears in a space you choose within 30 feet of you. The Fighter is of the same race as you and serves you loyally until death, believing the fates have drawn him or her to you. You control this character.

Session 4

A Dragonborn fighter, Tiefling cleric, and Gnome wizard are all in the kitchen.

Zero snacks to be found.

We make our way, carefully, to the Dining Room. The door is locked. K’myr knocks, but there’s no answer. Krepsis stabs the door, narrowly missing the Tiefling’s hand as she goes for another knock. Upset, Krepsis uses his acid breath while Pinenut keeps a lookout in the hall. Disgruntled from almost having her hand run through with a flametongue sword, K’myr walks to the second door.

It’s open.

Session 3

You know what? I don’t even know how to describe last Thursday’s session (7-19). There were some new elements, and things got a little crazy, so I’m going to do my best to write it as I remember it but that is a little up in the air right now, haha.

First things first, we did not meet up in the game store this time. Instead my husband and I decided to host things at our house since we could have the freedom to be a little noisier, not have to worry about policing our language, you know, basics.

We notice is that our DM has brought a board with him, and it’s from the game CLUE. He’s also drawing on it with dry erase marker to make the 1-inch movement squares so we’re really curious as to what our adventure is going to bring this evening.

So 6:30 rolls around, our wizard has arrived, nachos are made, it’s a great time… except that our barbarian is missing. No big deal, though, he usually arrives around 7 so we’ll just talk and work out some downtime activities until then.

Now it’s 7:30 and none of us have heard from him, so we all hope he’s okay and proceed to start playing without him.

Our party has received word (at Sanctum, from Amilcar as usual…) that there was a party in Empire City (where K’myr is from!) and all the guests as well as a well-known noble’s son went missing. Anyone who went into the house did not leave, so the noble, in a fit of desperation and panic, went into the house and has not been heard from since.

Now we’re in the house, standing in the hall, just investigating as adventurers do. K’myr lifts the carpet and finds that the dust has been swept underneath it, so someone is still cleaning despite the fact that everyone who was in this place had disappeared.

We move into the Study. There are papers on the desk but nothing really of importance. Pinenut (our Wizard) discovers a secret tunnel and Krepsis investigates it, but comes back rather than explore it fully. K’myr finds a bracelet under a couch cushion and puts it in her bag. She’s not sure whether she’ll return it yet or not.
Curious, we press onward, into the Library. Some books have fallen off the shelves, and we can hear noise. Krepsis investigates it, and is attacked by an Intellect Devourer.

Oh crap.

There is also something of interest on the table, so Krepsis picks it up. He now has a gun with no ammunition.

There’s nothing really of interest in the Billiard Room, so we go to the Conservatory. There is a painting there of the noble and his son, as well as a statue. Krepsis picks up the statue and begins to hear a whisper in his mind, but drops it into the Bag of Holding before it has a chance to speak. (both my husband and I are freaking out, because I was the one who asked him to pick it up and put it in the bag o.O meanwhile Pinenut is just happy it wasn’t him.

In the Ballroom, there is a man playing the piano. He speaks to us, but his mouth isn’t moving. Krepsis attacks and we kill the odd creature, disgusted and hoping there’s something a little better in the Kitchen.

Sure, yeah, there’s a guy in the with a cleaver, so we knock him out too. He may or may not have been a living person, but we’re apparently murder hobos now, so we don’t really care. K’myr is really upset that everyone is just attacking things without talking first, because our task is specifically to save anyone we can.

We ended our game in the kitchen, so I’m sure K’myr is going to be more than happy to investigate the fridge and cabinets for anything of use.

Trying to think of how I can help the DM curb the murderous fighter and wizard, and also really interested in that sentient (?) statue…

Level 8 Feat?

Does anyone know any good feats for a Trickery Domain Cleric? Was going to go with Magic Initiate at level 8 since I already have Healer. Going to grab Minor Illusion, Vicious Mockery, and Silent Image from the Bard spell list.

Session 2

Time to get ahead or… three?

Had our second D&D session on Thursday, and thankfully everyone was able to join again. ^^

We stayed in the mining outpost for about 15 days, just trying to fix up the inn and get the place in order. The DM, impressed by our ability to sidetrack so quickly and efficiently, allowed us to name it The Giantsbane Outpost. We also renamed the inn Three Blind Giants.

Returning to Sanctum was rather uneventful, and the paladin Amilcar was once again standing before us with his pure white scythe known as the Wing of Bahamut, its eye ever-watchful as he addressed us.

Somewhere in the town of Glenn, a chimera is wreaking havoc on the townspeople. We are to head there immediately to take care of it.

Eleven days’ travel bring us to the small town of Glenn, whereupon we meet the mayor and – after a few accusations from Pinenut and Torinn about whether or not said mayor is stealing from the town – Torinn remembers he’d heard a rumor that the creature had been spotted about ten miles out.

He leaves the tavern immediately, intent on finding the creature without so much as a plan or asking if we would like to follow along.

We follow anyway.

It doesn’t take us long to find the creature’s den, a series of tunnels leading to a large hoard of treasure, but the creature itself is nowhere to be seen.

A hawk flies overhead.

Torinn is busy looting, Krepsis is hiding in a tunnel, K’myr is hidden in another tunnel, and Pinenut is sneaking his way behind a rock.

K’myr’s duplicate appears and begins skipping through the open field.

The hawk disappears in a cloud of feathers as an enormous shadow blocks the sun.

Invoke Duplicity!

Was trying to find out how long this lasted and I couldn't find anything online so I had to resort to opening my PHB - turns out it only lasts for a minute. That's okay, though, because in one minute, I can wreak some decent havoc. 😆

Guiding Bolt at 3rd level?

Why yes, yes I will.

Spell Cards!

Picked up some spell cards from Barnes & Noble this weekend and I am super excited! I'm not usually one to get all the fancy things, but the cards help me visualize my spells and provide a quick reference without having to flip through my player's handbook.

Not to mention, but it also enables me to have fewer things on the table. I made a binder for my character sheet(s) and information so that I can take up less space on the game store tables.

K'myr Adala

Interested in finding out more about K'myr? Here's her sheet!

Session 1

Warning: Objects in mirror appear larger than. . .
nope, it’s giants.

We start off by meeting our 4th player, who had not been present the previous week. We are introduced to Torinn, the Red Dragonborn barbarian. Torinn is a rather gruff, rough-about-the-edges sort of person but at least K’myr seems happy to see him.

A bird flies in through the window, and Torinn makes a grab for it, trying to take the slip of paper from its mouth. He slips, and instead the bird pecks him on the pinky. Pinenut takes the letter, reads it, and passes it around for everyone else to read.

There is trouble in the west.

Off we go, we four adventurers called together by the paladin Amilcar. We have been told he is the last survivor of a group who defeated a powerful lich, but rumors stir that the lich has returned, and Amilcar – all of Mundus, really – needs our help should rumors prove true. Clearly we are but toddlers to an all-powerful lich as we are now, so Amilcar has assigned these tasks for us so that we may grow in both power and in bond as a group.

Thursday is Game Day!

I put out a note on a few websites looking for D&D groups in or around my area, and after a few days, I got a message that there was a group that had just started at a game store fairly closeby. So I get the DM’s info, send him a note, and my husband decides to tag along with me because, you know, safety and all that.

When we get to the group, meet the DM – Stephen – and the wizard, who’s name is Pinenut Woodbanger.

While the DM is helping my husband make a fighter (he wanted another barbarian, but this group already has one) I’m making a cleric… but not just any cleric, no. I’m making a cleric in the trickery domain, so jokingly I tell the DM and the wizard, “You’re all going to die.”

My husband makes a black Dragonborn fighter and I have a gray Tiefling trickery cleric. For the sake of story, the DM just says that we’ve been traveling together since about level 1 and that we’re all level 5 now. The wizard and barbarian have been together for just as long.

This means I have some choices, both in and out of character. While she does have Cure Wounds, rather than preparing Spare the Dying, she has Inflict Wounds. My reasoning being that the fighter sees me as capable (or else he wouldn’t respect me) so I have to be able to handle my own, meaning that I’ve dealt some damage in the time we’ve been together.

Anyway, we spent about 2 ½ hours making our characters and really only about 10 minutes actually playing.

I’ll update when I get more details so you can read our randomness!

Session 2: Part 1 of 2

It’s morning now, and our three adventurers have just finished breakfast.

Largo leads the team back to the orc camp, whose gates are closed and only one guard is standing outside. K’sagsoda and Dax hang back while the large Goliath approaches.

The guard, startled by the big man’s appearance – and remembering what he and his friends did yesterday – clears his throat before addressing him. “What you want?”

An ashen hand grips the guard’s shoulder tightly. “Chief. Now.”

With a mild whimper, the guard turns and opens the gate, and an unexpected sight is revealed.

Bloodstains on the ground, signs of struggle, and only three orcs visible in the camp where there had once been twenty. A large orc, easily standing a full head above the rest – but still shorter than Largo – steps out of his tent, thick arms crossed over his broad chest.

“Were you here yesterday?” He asks as K’sagsoda and Dax approach slowly, maintaining a good distance.

“I need to talk to you.”

“My men thought your display threatening, given my absence. What do you want?”

“We need information.”

“What about?”

“We’re looking for a temple that’s supposed to be somewhere out here.”

The chief nods. “Used to be one.”

“Do you know where it is?”

With a snap of his fingers, one of the three orcs in camp rushes to a far tent. “Maybe,” the chief nods, the orc coming back to Largo and handing him the torn piece of a map with an area circled, “that’d be about where your temple is.”

“I’m also looking for maybe… I scratch your back, you scratch mine. You’ve given us this map, so is there anything we could maybe do for you?”

The chief thinks for a moment, weighing his options carefully.

“The mine. A woman came through here not long ago, asking if we wanted to join her. Most of us said ‘no,’ but some wanted to leave with her,” he says, gesturing to the blood stains on the ground, “they changed their minds later. She headed to our mine and now we can’t use it. Clear it out and I’ll give you a prize for your time, but bring back proof it’s cleared.”

Largo nods. “Seems fair enough to me, Chief. Do we go through your camp to get to it?”

“No, you leave.” The chief gruffs, pointing to the only exit to his camp, and also presumably the same direction as the mine.

The adventurers leave and trek the little ways to the mine, finding the entrance blocked by rubble. Largo attempts to move the boulders out of the way.

[Rolls a natural 1.]

Seeing this large barbarian fail to move even a single rock, Dax steps forward and manages to move a couple rocks, after which Largo takes over and, with a massive sweep of his arms, clears the debris seemingly effortlessly before heading inside, K’sagsoda in the lead. Lucky, too, as there is a log suspended above them, ready to splatter anyone who would enter against the wall, but the trap remains untouched.

Laughter makes its way to their ears, a sort of giggling. Just around the corner they can see three gnolls, two armed with spears and one armed with a bow. In front of them are four hyenas.

They are dispatched with relative ease.

Using their stealth to make their way through the stone tunnels, they head into a small dead end to search for anything useful.

Carefully walking back into the main tunnel, the party happens upon a grisly sight:

A large chamber with a fire crackling in the center. On the ground is a dead guard wearing the colors of the Leed soldiers, beside him stand three gnolls huddled in terror. On the opposite side of the fire is a large creature with reddish-brown fur as it sits in a squat holding a gnoll by the arm, its feet off the ground.

It lifts the wriggling gnoll and takes a bite out of its side. The gnoll gives a yip and stops moving almost instantly. After feasting, the large creature makes a growl and the three gnolls rush to fulfill whatever command it has given, fleeing in terror.

Largo reaches out with his greataxe and catches two gnolls off guard, killing them both in a single hit each, whispering, “Ears,” to K’sagsoda, who knocks an arrow and damages the third.

Dax, terrified of whatever is in the cave ahead of them, has no intention of harming a fleeing creature, so Largo finishes it with a thrown hand axe. They advance on the creature on the other side of the fire.

The manticore rears up on its hind legs and roars, blood still dripping from its crooked teeth.

[This mine was completely unplanned; definitely took a paragraph or two from Critical Role]

K’sagsoda knocks an arrow and strikes the beast, but to little effect as it completely ignores the arrow in its chest.

Largo leaps over the fire separating them and goes into a frenzied rage, attacking recklessly against this beast causing it severe pain but barely slowing it down.

The manticore snarls, the spines on its tail quivering as they launch from the tail at the Aarakocra ranger, taking him down to half health in a single blow.

Shaking himself, Dax manages to fully heal the marksman as he knocks another arrow to strike again, this time causing significantly more damage, Largo taking advantage of its pain to bury his greataxe into its shoulder.

Strangely, the creature makes no attempt to leave the area of the altar, upon which candles and a single basket rest.

With a great swing of his axe, Largo cleaves the manticore’s head from its body, watching as it rolls with a sickening thump. He turns and sees the basket on the altar, and inside is the manticore’s baby, fast asleep.

Dax apprroaches, gesturing to the basket. “What is that?”

“The beast’s child. We should take it back to Leed, see if they can raise it to protect them.”

The half-elf’s face twists in disgust, pointing to the downed manticore, “You want one of those things alive? In Leed?”

It is not a thing, it’s a baby.”

It’s the baby of one of those. They cannot be trained!” Dax exclaims, grabbing for the basket, but Largo keeps it out of his reach.

Angered, Dax casts Command on Largo, who fails his saving throw. “Give.”

Largo gives him his greataxe.

He attempts another Command but fails, instead striking at the barbarian with Inflict Wounds.

[Dax rolls a 25 to hit versus Largo’s AC of 18.]

As the wave of necrotic energy hits him, Largo drops the baby’s basket and Dax takes it from him.

Don’t,” Largo begins, clutching his side where the spell hit, “touch. That. Baby.”

Dax’s left hand holds his holy symbol while the other hand holding the basket burns with Sacred Flame, igniting both baby and basket.
