Humble Beginnings

So we're getting ready to go through my little one-shot I've spent the past couple weeks writing, and I have the jitters something awful. >< My little boy Ares, though, he doesn't seem bothered at all - just look at him here ready to roll some dice!

My husband will be playing the part of our Goliath Barbarian, Largo Denison while our kill-happy roommate is haphazardly handling the Aarakocra Ranger, K'sagsoda Suka.

Largo has a good amount of backstory already filled in while I've been informed K'sagsoda (like our roommate), "just wants to kill things". Great. I'm a first-time DM and I have no idea how to handle a player who wants nothing to do with any of the story or interactions I've painstakingly written out. I mean, not like players stick to the plan anyway, but still.

I've read all about player consequences and even posted about it here if you recall. I've watched GM Tips and feel armed and ready to tackle this, but the nerves are still there, and hopefully I won't have to use any of the techniques I've read about. :S

Here's hoping, right?

Current desktop situation... so many windows!

When the sorcerer found the dragon, it was attacking a grape.
This was only possible because the dragon was not much larger than a grape itself, but she still had to do a double take to be sure the object it was fighting with such animosity was in fact inanimate.

DM level up!

Hey all! Just checking in for today and wanted to let you know I'm building my DM screen!

It's nothing fancy, but it's better than having 8+ desktops open on a little laptop and having to switch between them constantly, which is unfortunately what I have been doing, and it really throws off the flow of gameplay.

So I'm taking some steps to make things as smooth as possible. ^^ What do you think?

I have potions and player notes on the left because 1) I always forget Largo's exhaustion (I think he does, too) 2) I've never heard/seen K'sagsoda even mention Hunter's Mark, so I'll try to give helpful reminders when I can. ^^ Well, at least until the point where they should remember on their own. I can only do so much after all.

Here on the right side I have basic guidelines for how famous my players are/will be, as well as miscellaneous expenses that I'm tired of looking up.

And that's what I have so far! ^^ I'll post updates on the Instagram page, so feel free to look for any pictures there, too.

Then there were 2...

Largo, K'sagsoda and what's this?

That's right, I've hidden some NPCs in this one-shot that, if approached properly, will join the campaign!

Session Zero

Oh my goodness it's happening! Sat down for Session Zero to work out character creation, a little backstory, and also covering expectations of both players and the DM.
I have 2 players, my husband and our roommate. We sat down at the dining table and here's what we came up with:

Player Expectations:

  • entertaining
  • things to kill

DM Expectations:

  • phones on silent when at the table
  • out of character talk to a minimum
  • tell me things (character backstory, details, etc) and I'll work it into the story ^^

Side note: we're using D&D Beyond (the unpaid version) to create our characters, just to save space on the table. I've allowed use of Critical Role and Homebrew things, so apologies if we go off the book sometimes.

The Characters:

Largo Denison
   Goliath Barbarian

K'sagsoda Suka
   Aarakocra Ranger

That's what we've come up with so far, so wish us luck!

Poem

Nothing Gold Can Stay
- by: Robert Frost

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Hello again, night owls! Before I go any further, I have a confession to make: I've been pulled back into Diablo IV  by my husband. I kn...
